Christmas has always been my favorite holiday season. I love the decorations, lights and excitement in the air. Children with their looks of wonder as they wait to talk to Santa. Their bright eyes shining as they see the Christmas tree lights for the first time each year. The presents, stockings stuffed to overflowing, family gathering to share this special time of year. This and more adds to the magic of Christmas.

I grew up in Canada so Christmas to me means snow, skating in the park and building snow forts. One of the traditions in my family was to put up a bare Christmas tree on the day before Christmas. After Midnight Mass and we children were in bed Santa and his elves decorated the tree. Christmas morning we saw the tree dressed in colored lights and decorations with all the presents around the base. Our tree was not taken down until January 6Th, the Feast of the Epiphany or Three Wise Men.

Our stockings were filled with an orange in the toe, an apple in the heel with nuts in the shell between the two. These goodies were followed by a small package of hard Christmas candy and a couple of small toys with a candy cane sticking out of the top. Because of the rationing during the Second World War these were really special treats and not something we could get except at Christmas time.

My most memorable Christmas was when I was about six and had begun to doubt Santa. I woke up and had to go to the bathroom but was not so sure that I would get out of bed and venture down the hall without some trepidation. Finally I sneaked out of my room and down the hall as far as the living room door. Peeking through the door I spotted Santa bent over in front of the tree. All I saw was his red bottom as he worked adding Christmas balls to the lower branches. I hurried back to bed and waited for what seemed hours before I again ventured out. The house was quiet and dark so I knew Santa was finished and had gone on to his next stop. It was a few years later I learned my father wore long red underwear in the winter and the mystery of Santa decorating our tree was solved.

As a teenager we moved to Southern California but the need for snow at Christmas took us up the mountains to my aunt's cabin for the Christmas season. Putting up an empty tree changed with my own children because everyone had a decorated tree right after Thanksgiving and they didn't understand why we couldn't have one too. I would still rather the "Santa decorates tradition" and think a lot of the mystery and fun is lost to the youngsters today. We made most of our gifts and I still do. A handmade gift takes time and effort so the person who receives it knows you thought of them as you planned and constructed something just for them.

It is my greatest wish that you and your family have many happy memories of this wonderful season. In the pages of A Bluebonnet Christmas I hope you will find ideas to help you celebrate the season, without totally ruining you budget, and help to relieve some of the stress with all you have to do.
